Weight gain and sleep disturbances: How sleep apnea could lead to weight gain?

Having a sleep disorder like sleep apnea makes it harder to sleep well and can lead to gaining more weight for certain people.

Often patients that suffer from sleep apnea also present as overweight or obese. Carrying extra weight can be a factor that contributes to having and/or developing sleep apnea. Often overweight and obese patients present with disorders in glucose metabolism. When normoglycemia leads to insulin resistance, patients can develop type II diabetes. Having sleep apnea also predisposes that individual to disorders in glucose metabolism. Treating sleep apnea can lead to patient’s sleeping more and reversing the negative effects on their body.

A long term study with female nurses aged 42 to 67 showed an increase in type II diabetes.

Sleep disturbances other than sleep apnea can also lead to weight gain. Working the night shift has been shown to lead to excess weight, that can predispose the individual to type II diabetes. As many a sleep technologist can attest to, the freshman twenty, has nothing on the night shift thirty. I could have sworn my pants were not so tight when I started working nights.

In a long term study female nurses aged 42 to 67 showed an increase in type II diabetes. They had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, nor cancer, they worked nights on a rotating shift, and also gained weight. Factors that could help when starting night shift work is having the opportunity to nap at some point during the night and to continue physical activity in daily routines.

When sleep deprived it is easier to reach for the coffee and carb laden sugary goodness. When constantly sleep deprived, these extra calories lead to excess weight gain. This can lead to many health problems down the line. Having a sleep disorder like sleep apnea makes it harder to sleep well and can lead to gaining more weight for certain people. Treating sleep apnea can help people lose weight.  They are able to sleep complete nights and will not reach for the extra caffeine and sugar to stay awake.
