People would often break their sleep into two sleep sessions. They would wake during the twilight hours and would get up to read and socialize. There is also the concept of the siesta where people would sleep in the afternoon and wake in the evening.

Around half of Japanese people in their forties get less than six hours of sleep per night. A 2017 national health and nutrition survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, measured the daily average sleep (based on the previous one-month period) for men and women in their twenties and over.
