EEG technology: These aren’t the droids you’re looking for

Advances in EEG technology may enable you to control things using your mind.

Currently, recording an EEG requires a technologist trained in placement of the electrodes using the 10-20 system. The 10-20 system stands for placing electrodes 10% and 20% of the total distance from front to back and/or right to left of the skull .

These fixed site points are not at the same place for everyone, therefore the measurements on one individual do not exactly match the measurements of another. This is part of the problem noted with wearable EEG technology, the measured sites are different for each person. The fixed positions of the electrodes on these technologies may not coincide with the same site nor the true site on every persons head. This lack of standardized reproducibility puts their clinical use into question.

There are inroads being made into providing this EEG information to the consumer in order to gather some info that can gleam an insight into possible sleep, and/or neurological disorders. The US Army’s Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) was looking into wearable technology that could be used to monitor a driver’s drowsiness and subsequent effects on driving abilities. This could have an application in the general population and help those with sleep issues get treatment more quickly.

Remington Mallett of the university of Missouri St-Louis, looked into research into brain-computer interfaces and decided to use this to see if when people are lucid dreaming they can control a computer. He says there is a link in the brainwaves used when awake and while we lucid dream. When he tested it, he was able to perform the task.
