Sleep Paralysis

What is sleep paralysis?

Sleep paralysis presents as being awake without the ability to move or speak. Many people have experienced this sensation. There are hypnogogic, occur when you are falling asleep, hallucinations that may be accompanied by sleep paralysis. Hypnogogia is a symptom of narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a disorder where the patient is extremely sleepy and can fall sleep while entering into a REM state of sleep.

Many people experience recurrent sleep paralysis that may not need to be addressed medically.

Hypnopompic, occur when waking, hallucinations can also occur with paralysis and can occur when a patient is stressed and has poor or insufficient sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs because when a patient wakes out of REM sleep, the muscles are still atonic (without muscle tone). It may take a few moments to a few minutes before you feel like you have the ability to move again. Some people experience hallucinations like other people or creatures in the room with them. Some also experience auditory hallucinations.

It is not a pleasant experience to say the least. Many people experience recurrent sleep paralysis that may not need to be addressed medically. In the case of someone with narcolepsy, it is important to seek treatment because the excessive sleepiness can negatively impact their lives. Treatments are available, and a sleep specialist can help decide what works best for you.

These  experiences have been recorded since ancient times, “Chinese people have believed that the soul of a person is vulnerable to the influence of spirits during sleep.” There is the belief that there is a close relationship between sleep and the spiritual world. Many of the experiences are what we know of today as hypnogogic or hypnopompic paralysis.

When monitoring a patient during a sleep study, sleep paralysis may be addressed only when the patient makes a statement regarding the experience. It’s important to realize that the person experiencing sleep paralysis feels that the hallucinations are in fact real.

Just like the Chinese folklore, there are several folklores
from various part of the world about sleep paralysis. But the truth is, unless
we have detailed research, and for particular cases, get a sleep analysis
report like those that Clinique Summoned prepares, we cannot come down to one
    root cause of this condition.
